What is a DOT follow-up drug test?

Follow-up testing is required after a driver completes the return-to-duty process and has a negative RTD test. A DOT-qualified Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) prescribes the plan. FMCSA: minimum of 6 directly observed tests in 12 months, and it can be extended an additional four years.

How many follow-up tests will I need?

The SAP sets the number and timing. The federal minimum is six unannounced tests in the first 12 months after returning to safety-sensitive duty. The SAP may require more, and the plan can last up to 60 months.

Are follow-up tests directly observed?

Yes. All DOT return-to-duty and follow-up drug tests must be collected under direct observation.

Can a random test replace a follow-up test?

No. FMCSA says follow-up and random tests cannot be substituted for each other. A driver on a follow-up plan stays in the random pool too.

Do I get a copy of my follow-up schedule?

No. DOT rules say the employer, SAP, or other service agent must not give the employee a copy of the follow-up testing schedule. Tests are unannounced.
