What is a DOT breath alcohol test?

A DOT alcohol test uses an evidential breath testing (EBT) device — a NHTSA-approved device for measuring alcohol concentration.

What alcohol concentration is a DOT violation?

FMCSA prohibits a driver from performing safety-sensitive functions with an alcohol concentration of 0.04 or greater. A result of 0.02 or greater but less than 0.04 means the driver must be removed from duty for 24 hours.

When is a breath alcohol test required?

DOT alcohol tests are used for the required testing reasons (including post-accident, random, reasonable suspicion, return-to-duty, and follow-up when alcohol is part of the plan). After a qualifying accident, an alcohol test must be done within 8 hours.

Does a 0.04 alcohol result go to the Clearinghouse?

Yes. Employers must report an alcohol confirmation test result of 0.04 or greater to the FMCSA Clearinghouse.
